A New Standard for Offset Crank Placement

Sometimes, a small change in hardware placement can make a meaningful difference in how a window functions. Awake Window & Door Co. is updating its standard crank position on narrower casement windows, moving the crank closer to the hinge jamb to help maximize the clear opening.

Understanding the New Placement

For applicable casement units less than 36 inches wide, the standard offset configuration positions the centerline of the crank cover 8 inches from the outside edge of the hinge jamb.

The measurement is taken to the center of the crank cover — not to the handle, the edge of the cover, or the glass opening. Using a defined reference point gives dealers, designers, and project teams a clear way to understand the intended hardware location.

The offset location follows the window’s handing. Right- and left-hand versions mirror one another, with the crank positioned toward the corresponding hinge jamb and the same 8-inch centerline measurement applied.

An Existing Option, a More Consistent Standard

Offset crank placement is already part of Awake’s offering. What is changing is its use as the standard configuration on narrower units.

Rather than assuming a centered crank is the appropriate starting point for every window width, the updated approach prioritizes offset placement where it can help preserve more of the usable opening. This is a practical refinement focused on window operation and clear opening — not simply a cosmetic change to the hardware.
