Provide Meaningful Second Chance Employment

One of the biggest issues contributing to the high recidivism rate in the USA (50% who leave prison end up back within 5 years), is that companies are unwilling to hire people with a prior record. This form of legal discrimination is considered best practice and a wise risk reduction. At Awake, we want to show the market that this vulnerable people group is capable of building the best window and door products in the market. Our mission is to create best-in-class products, services, and customer experiences, and to achieve it with an employee base that is often overlooked or neglected.

GADFLY MENTALITY

At Awake, we also encourage all of our customers and vendors to embrace a "Gadfly Mentality" when it comes to working with us. Tell us the hard truth. Let us know how we can be better. Push us to never settle. Embrace the tension that produces the greatest solutions to complex problems.
At Awake, we challenge all employees to have a "Gadfly Mentality." Inspired by a few of the greatest leaders in history, we use this word to shape a mentality that is rooted in saying the hard thing, rejecting the status quo, and constantly identifying the problems we face and working to solve them.
When on trial for his life, Socrates, pointed out that dissent, like the gadfly, was easy to swat, but the cost to society of silencing individuals who were irritating could be very high. He said the role of a gadfly was "to sting people and whip them into a fury, all in the service of truth."
In "Letters from Birmingham Jail," Martin Luther King Jr. wrote in 1963: “we must see the need of having nonviolent gadflies to create the kind of tension in society that will help men to rise from the dark depths of prejudice and racism to the majestic heights of understanding and brotherhood."
It's the "Gadfly Mentality" that pushed us to innovate 3/4" door interlockers, door heights as tall as 16', casement sightlines as narrow as 2", or mulling solutions that can be inserted or common mull. It's also the mentality that pushed us to build a business around second chance employment.
